I really can’t complain about my life. I can’t. Or maybe I should say that I shouldn’t complain. But sometimes I still do.
My name is Sophie Byrne. Not Sophia, Sophie. Only Soph if you know me really, really well. That limits the people who call me Soph to my parents, my boyfriend and my three closest friends.
What else should you know about me? I’m twenty-six years old. I was born and raised in New Jersey. Summit, New Jersey, to be exact. My parents are wonderful, and I am their only child.
Well… actually, I’m not their only child. I should say that I’m their only living child. My parents had another daughter, Rachel, who died long before I was even born. She was only fifteen and they told me she died of a drug overdose. I guess that’s true. They don’t talk about her, and they get mad if I ask about her, so, long ago, I gave up trying to know more about Rachel. Sometimes I look at the few pictures of her around my parents’ house, and I wonder what she was like. She looked so much like me; I wonder if we would have been friends. I like to think so.
Anyway, again, I’m twenty-six. I’m not a big woman, but I am tall, like both of my parents. I’m five feet, eight inches, so until I was late in college, I felt like a frigging Amazon.
