Mel Ott is a name that I knew of growing up but it didn't carry the kind of mysticism and drama that the names Ruth, Mays, Aaron, or Musial did. Though when I began this project, he was someone I wanted to dig into and learn more about. And I'm glad I did. First off - I had no idea just how great a player he was. At the time of his retirement, he was the NL leader in HR's with 511 and in the weirdest quirk, he never won an MVP though he led the league in many categories year after year. He just seems to sit quietly and unassumingly on so many top lists. And what's more and even more importantly....he was of baseball's gentlemen. My seventh 7 x 10.5" football print in this series is titled "The Spin Doctor" based on the five-time Pro Bowler, 1973 Offensive Rookie of the Year, and Minnesota legend Chuck Foreman. It's now available in the shop. What's more, I got to collaborate with Chuck himself on this piece and I'm proud to share that autograph options are also available in the shop, in addition to regular unsigned copies. I loved getting to meet Chuck and diving into his story for this piece and this is one of the rare pieces where it just all came together. What was new to me was that I learned that Chuck went to the University of Miami. In Jr. High, my LIFE was all about the Miami Hurricanes, and it's pretty near impossible to find any picture of me from that time I wasn't wearing some form of Canes paraphernalia. But I digress. Chuck was a force on the field and every bit earned that fantastic nickname of his. I asked him what we could put in that speech bubble. Chuck said he was like a "quiet assassin", especially with Bud Grant. He said that he didn't trash talk much but one thing he always said to opponents who would tackle him or trash talk him was, "Now you know! I'll be back 25 more times!". I loved that little piece on on-field insight and was so pleased to be able to include it on the work.

I collaborated with the incredible Mr. Rod Carew himself on this print and I'm thrilled to share that autographed options are also available in the shop. I've been extremely fortunate to work with many incredible players and Hall of Famers throughout this project but working with Rod Carew certainly had me starstruck. Growing up in Southern California, my love for baseball started flickering on right as Rod's career was wrapping up here in Anaheim. Even then, it was a given that Rod would be walking easily into Cooperstown on the first ballot. I enjoyed talking with Rod in preparation for this piece - what a great presence, a great storyteller and a great human being. You know what name sounds REALLY comic booky but we're so used to it that we sort of forget how hyperbolic it sounds? World Series. I envisioned one of the most legendary moments (and legendary characters for that matter) in all of baseball as part of a "World Series" series. This is my second of this series within the series in face. No other comic series grabbed my attention quite like Marvel's 'Secret Wars' did so I used that as my guiding light here. No doubt there will be more Pop Fly prints to come in the "World Series" collection. Too dramatic of a name, too rich of a history to leave on the shelf. This piece is a Ruth piece, sure, and it's an event piece, but moreover its a World Series piece - where the stakes are higher, the time is shorter, and the drama of a long season is at it's crescendo.
