Working on building sites, farms and long-haul ships, I knew that my femininity was often seen to imply weakness, incompetence and inexperience. Dressed in standard-issue, ill fitting workwear, I felt overlooked - a feeling exacerbated by the harassment and isolation I experienced and for which gender seemed to be the only catalyst. SÜK started as a fantasy in my head during these long days at work; an exciting place my mind would return to when I was chaffing under sagging, unflattering overalls. I would mentally design workwear that would support my body and make me feel tough and professional. As I saw the number of femme tradies increase, I knew that this would be a problem for a growing number of people like me. There was also a message I wanted to communicate, that went beyond good fits: that femininity is powerful, necessary and impressive. And our bodies and expression deserve admiration and respect for our hard work and boundless creativity. SÜK is a wink to all the men on site who thought ‘the girls’ were subpar, an outright gift to all identities who’s power has, until now, been dismissed.
